The Overberg of the Western Cape

The Overberg should be De Overberg - a Dutch name meaning over the mountain and describes the area on the Southern part of the African Continent - just on the "eastern side of the Hottentots-Holland Mountain range. The coastal towns are ranked amongst the world's most rewarding for whale-watching spots.  The fynbos veld makes up the greater portion of the Cape Floral Kingdom.   Cape Agulhas is Africa’s southernmost tip and it is said that this is where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet.  De Hoop Nature reserve is famed for it’s endemic fynbos plants and it’s Atlantic waters host a large number of Southern right whales from May to October.  The white sand dunes, high limestone cliffs and wetlands allow nature-lovers time to be quiet, watch birds and put to good use hiking boots as the various trails suit all level of fitness.

Grootbos, named after the reserve's indigenous white Milkwood tres extends over 1000 hectares and is home to South Africa's largest private fynbos garden.
