The Waterberg - Another big 5 attraction in LimpopoSo just what should you expect from your Waterberg Safari. The Waterberg Mountains extend over about 5 000 square kilometers of stunning landscape with picturesque valleys – the ideal location to get away from it all. The outer perimeter of the mountain range is spectacular, the highest parts being in the southwest and encompasses the Marakele National Park. The Waterber is rich in archeological history and numerous artifacts have been found here which date back to Stone Age period. But its the big expances and untamed spirit of the Waterberg that makes a Waterberg safari so attractive. The area includes the Welgevonden Game Reserves and the Waterberg Conservancy, including Entabeni and Mabula Game reserves, Lapalala as well as the Marakele National Park. It has rapidly become a popular weekend safari destination out of Johannesburg for the reasons that; it is only a couple of hours drive north of the International airport; it has the 'Big Five" animals; it is importantly Malaria free. The Waterberg region is more elevated than most other game reserves in South Africa and has a somewhat cooler climate. Spectacular thunder and lightening showers dominate in February and March. At this time it is hot and humid. The bush becomes very thick which makes game viewing more difficult. Apr-Sep is the cool and dry winter season. Days are warm and sunny, and game viewing is facilitated as the bush is less dense. This is the time to plan your Waterberg safari. But remember it gets cold in the winter months of June to August. |
